Cooper the School Dog

We would like to introduce you to Cooper, our school dog.

Cooper will be working at Springbank Primary Academy on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

It has been shown that children can benefit both educationally and emotionally, increase their understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills through contact with a dog. In addition to these benefits, children take great enjoyment from interaction with a dog and these are the reasons why we believe that Cooper will help the pupils at Springbank.

Cooper is a Sprocker Spaniel, a breed who are known for their placid and friendly nature. They are affectionate dogs without guarding instincts or possession. Cooper is a regular visitor to other GLA schools with proven successes in helping children. Cooper will initially be kept in my office to get used to school life. When walking around the school he will be kept on a lead and under the supervision of an adult.

We have completed a Risk Assessment and systems and processes have been put in place to ensure that everyone is safe and happy.

We realise that some children may have phobias about dogs and I hope that both Cooper and children can learn together and overcome any phobias that they may have.  However, if you do not want your child to be in the company of a school dog then we respect your decision and ask that you contact the school office and we will ensure that your child does not have any contact.
